Inventive Spelling

At GPS we help students’ future success as readers by giving them the freedom to invent their own spellings when they write. Inventive Spelling improves both a child’s phonological and orthographic growth. We encourage children to take risks and to spell words on their own to help them become better readers. It is a necessary stage to develop the proficiency as a competent and confident student!

The International Literacy Association recently released a brief in July that recommends the teaching of “systematic and explicit” phonics in all early-reading instruction. Education Week newspaper states that “phonics are a bridge to meaning, reasoning and a necessary step toward being able to read any word.”
